Drinking bitter wine is a cherished tradition in Dong villages. It is made from high-quality glutinous rice produced by Dong villagers. Glutinous rice is steamed, cooled and then fermented with distiller’s yeast. It is fragrant and sweet, has less alcohol than Chinese liquor and contains glucose, amino acids and other nutrients. Drinking it can stimulate appetite, replenish blood and tonify kidney.
Huangdu Dong Village and Yutou Dong Village of Tongdao County and Jingzhou County are known for the bitter wine brewed by Dong people.
