Longxi old town is located on the north bank of Wushui river in Xinhuang Dong Autonomous County. It extends to Dayanpo in the East, Changtanping in the west, Wushui River in the South, and Dadongping in the north, covering an area of 2.02 square kilometers. The national highway 320 and the Hunan & Guizhou double-tracking railway go through the old town. The old town stands by mountains and rivers and faces the new town of Xinhuang county across the river, antique sceneries composing a picture of simplicity and beauty. Longxi old town was established in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties and flourished during the Anti Japanese War. It is named Longxikou (the mouth of Longxi river) because it is where the Longxi river, which originates from the upper reachers of Yelang Valley, flows into the Wushui river. In the past, Longxikou was one of the three major wharves in the Yuan River (the other two are Changde and Hongjiang). With more than 300 years of history, it was once synonymous with the town of Huangzhou and is known as "little Hankou".
The ancient town has been a famous commercial port on the border between Hunan and Guizhou provinces since ancient times. It is the largest material distribution center in southeast Guizhou and also the economic hub and trade center of Xinhuang county, handling more than 200 tons of goods per day. The renowned enterprises, such as “eight major oil brands” and “seven sons”, have long enjoyed a high reputation. There are many shops, factories and workshops famous for their gold, silver and garment products. On the market day, merchants gather, traffic flows, and the market is very prosperous, thus forming a beautiful picture of a booming market in Longxikou. The buildings in the ancient town incorporate the essence of ancient buildings, such as the cellar house, the white wall and black roof of the stilted building, the horse head wall and so on. They are exquisitely designed, with a combination of artistry and fire and theft prevention. The ancient streets and alleys extend in all directions and are well arranged. The stone streets are designed and built in high quality. All kinds of temples gather here, such as Zaowang palace, Yuwang palace, Longxi temple, and Longwang temple, representing the three major religions in China (Taoism, Buddhism, and Christianity). The vigorous incense and endless stream of pilgrims demonstrate the prosperous religious culture. At the same time, Lu You, Wang Changling, Lin Zexu, Cheng Qian, Marshal He Long and other historical celebrities have left their footprints here. In the old town stand Marshal He Long's Long March headquarters, the magnificent Zhenjiang Pavilion, the fascinating Wind and Rain Bridge in Dong Township, and the drum tower, showing the simple style and rich folk customs of Longxi old town. Longxi old town integrates nationality, religion and culture, as well as natural landscape, ancient architectural culture and folk customs. It is the epitome of Dong culture and Nuo culture, a rare national treasure and precious Dong cultural heritage.
