Located in the southern suburb of Huitong County, Su Yu Park was built in 1985. Zhang Aiping, the then Minister of Defense of the People’s Republic of China, inscribed the name of Su Yu Monument in 1986. The monument is 11.2 meters high with a 7.6-meter-high stele which symbolizes that General Su Yu passed away at the age of 76. Its fagade is dominated by inscriptions of Zhang Zhen, Mao Zhiyong and other national leaders; and at the center of its plinth lies a cinerary casket containing some of the general’s ashes. In September 1991, Yang Sangkun, the then President of the People’s Republic of China, inscribed the name of Su Yu Memorial Hall.
The park is home to Su Yu Memorial Hall, Su Yu Monument, He Qiong Memorial Pavilion, Red Army Long March Memorial Pavilion, Liberation Pavilion and other recreational facilities. Lying at the foot of a mountain and beside a river, the park is a good place for sightseeing and recreation with its beautiful views dotted with trees and pavilions.
