Furong Pavilion, or Lotus Tower, located at the confluence of Yuanjiang and Wushui rivers, is a national AAA-level scenic spot and a key cultural relics protection unit of Hunan Province. The park of Furong Pavilion, covering an area of 4,250 m2 and keeping the construction style of a classical Chinese garden, has been a tourist attraction for thousands of years with beautiful scenery and convenient transportation. Men of letters from the past dynasties used to have scholarly pastimes here, chanting poetry and painting pictures. A case in point is Wang Changling (698-756), a talented poet of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), who composed the classic poem “A Farewell to Xin Jian at Lotus Tower” here after he was relegated to Longbiao (now Hongjiang City), which made this pavilion well known across the country. Now, the major collections in the park include around 200 pieces of stone inscriptions, calligraphy and paintings of different dynasties, as well as a big ancient iron bell and a large exquisite root carving.
