Mibei Miao Township, Xinhuang County – In the height of summer, traversing Mibei Miao Township in Xinhuang Dong Autonomous County—nestled at an average elevation of over 700 meters—reveals herds of yellow cattle dotting the hillsides, thriving medicinal herbs beneath tea-oil groves, and vast expanses of rice paddies rippling with vibrant green... This thriving rural landscape vividly illustrates the township's strategy of leveraging its mountainous terrain and exploring diverse pathways to advance rural revitalization.

Specialized Farming: Unearthing Value from the Hills

Based on the unique ecology of the Miao Mountain Range foothills extending from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Mibei has transformed its mountainous challenges into industrial strengths. The township prioritizes eco-friendly cattle farming using free-range methods. Current cattle inventory exceeds 2,500 heads, supported by 5 large-scale farms (each over 50 heads) and 15 breeding cow farms. Complemented by forage cultivation and disease prevention systems, Mibei has successfully established a premium "Alpine Yellow Cattle" brand renowned for its tender meat. Concurrently, the township's pig farming has expanded to over 15,000 heads, while ecological chicken farms supplement poultry production. An innovative "tea-oil trees + Polygonatum sibiricum" intercropping model has created a 300-mu (approximately 20-hectare) demonstration base for under-forest economy, driving total Polygonatum cultivation to 1500 mu (approximately 100 hectares). Characteristic fruits like golden pears and honey crisp plums yield over 500,000 jin (approximately 250 metric tons) annually. Combined with 300 mu (approximately 20 hectares) of flue-cured tobacco, these diversified industries collectively boost village collective income by an estimated 200,000 yuan (approx. $28,000 USD) per year.

Securing Grain Foundations: Fertile Land, Smart Techniques

Alongside thriving specialty sectors, Mibei firmly safeguards food security. The township maintains stable rice cultivation on 13,200 mu (approximately 880 hectares ) and drought-resistant crops on 4,200 mu (approximately 280 hectares). During the 2025 spring planting, the Township Agricultural Service Center distributed 400 kg of corn seeds and 1,000 kg of soybean seeds to over 500 farmers across 8 administrative villages. Agricultural technicians provided hands-on, household-level guidance—from seed selection to field management—promoting improved varieties and techniques to ensure stable and increased grain yields, securing the people's "rice bowl."

Innovative Mechanisms: the Party and the Masses Collaboration

To energize development, Mibei pioneered the "Party Branch + Cooperative + Large-Scale Farmers" model, effectively mobilizing resources. This has nurtured 3 provincial-level model cooperatives/farms and added 36 new market entities. During the "My Field in Miao Township" field adoption program, the Party members and cadres led by example in rice planting and maintenance, uniting efforts for grain production. WeChat groups offer instant solutions to farming issues, while technicians promote practical skills like strip intercropping and eco-friendly pest control door-to-door. Concurrently, targeted policies like special cattle breeding loans and agricultural insurance mitigate risks and support farmers.

Ecology as the Canvas: Painting a New Landscape

Rural revitalization relies on ecological health. Mibei rigorously tackles abandoned farmland and non-grain crop encroachment, advances high-standard farmland construction on 8,400 (approximately 560 hectares), and combats illegal sand mining and deforestation to continuously improve the living environment. The circular model integrating ecological livestock farming with forest herb cultivation delivers both economic and environmental benefits.

"Unlocking the dormant potential of our mountainous resources to generate tangible benefits is the key to our revitalization," stated a leading official of Mibei Miao Township. By enhancing specialty industries, underpinning food security, and innovating management mechanisms, this Miao township on the Hunan-Guizhou border is forging a sustainable path toward "ecological beauty, industrial prosperity, and public well-being."
